Periodontal disease is a chronic disease and therefore one cannot heal. By controlling the infection in the dentogingival area the progression of the disease can be arrested. A long-term successful periodontal therapy relies both on patient’s efforts with oral hygiene and those of the periodontist to provide regular maintenance care and assess that no recurrence occurs.

After the active phase of infection control is concluded and depending on individual risk for disease progression, maintenance visits are scheduled every three to six months.
